Among the up-and-coming German designers, his name keeps popping up at shows and collections. A symbol of a new generation with a penchant for all forms of crafts, Sebastian Herkner stays away from trendy high tech solutions, preferring the simple things of life to the sirens of innovation, between primary use and vernacular elegance. “There is a sensibility and an identity in my work that focus on function, material, and details. I investigate and interpret the characteristics of the various contexts of society and culture and I make every effort to transform them into new artefacts. With this approach, the most ordinary objects become imbued with respectability and personality. In this way, components that are seemingly contradictory reveal their quality, become harmonious through unexpected effects, and regain the esteem they are due. My inspiration often comes from observing people and their actions. It seems essential to me to look beyond our discipline because it’s the only way of offering and obtaining added value."
