Intramuros #227: French
No one is a prophet in their own land
When a certain design world tries to mimic the fashion industry by seeking out its talents of the year in the faux-radical, marketed posturing of silent poseurs, designers whose humble ambition is to create beautiful and useful objects must sometimes look to other shores. As the primary destination for our designers in search of partners with the innate intuition and cultivated courage that make certain manufacturers great talent scouts, Italy has been attracting young French designers for four generations.
Backpacks on their shoulders or portfolios under their arms, from Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec to Julie Richoz, Constance Guisset, Ionna Vautrin, and Guillaume Delvigne, they have all walked the streets of Milan to find success, which they then brought back to French soil or, like Marc Sadler and Philippe Tabet, to permanently adopt the country that gave them their start. While this issue celebrates French excellence on Italian soil, with everyone sharing the small and large stories that changed their lives, their journeys should also prompt us to question how we can reinvent ourselves, by learning from rather than copying the lessons of a country that turned its weaknesses—multiple but regional expertise, companies too family-oriented to become national flagships—into part of the reason for its success.
For while France continues to train some of the greatest talents in international design, it still needs to support them further in the dream of every object creator: to change people's lives by becoming a part of their homes.
